Chatedral of saint Dujam

Emperor Mausoleum is from outside octagonally shaped, inside it is circular in shape. Interior is adorned by eight corinthian columns made of red granite and above them eight smaller ones. The stone crown between pillars features the carvings of hunting, masks and human heads. The most important human figures present emperor Diocletianus and his wife Prisca. Mausolem cupola is constructed in brick layout, fan shaped. Diocletianus sarcophagus, made of red vulcanic stone – porfir, was situated in the centre. It assumed that sarcophagus was violently destroyed, and in Archaeological Museum yard in Split the possible sarcophagus parts were found. Christians had turned the mausoleum into church, and later it became Cathedral dedicated to Saint Maria. From early Middle Age it is more and more called by name of Saint Dujam, martyr from Solin and Split patron. Interior made this sacral space and it has changed through time. Split cathedral portal Made by local master, Andrija Buvina, carved in wallnut tree, in 28 fields are presented scenes from Christ life. Cathedral altars Righthand side altar was devoted to Saint Doimus, made by Bonino from Milano in 15 century. After some time left side altar Saint Stasa, work made by Juraj Dalmatinac. Above sarcophagus is portrait with mill stone around neck. Central sarcophagus relief shows «Christ' s Flagellation». In nothern niche, left from entrance, is situated new altar of Saint Dujam from 18th century. That is where the Saint powers are moved. The most beautiful scene is relief carving presenting martyr death of Saint Dujam in rococo style. Pulpit Situated on very entrance of cathedral, considered being built in 13th century on six marble coulmns. Eagle situated on top served as holly books stand. Choir stalls Made by unknown master in second half of 15th century. They are consisted of 2 excellently preserved benches richly decorated by romanescan embrodery and human figures. Cathedral Treasury Situated in sacristy building, adjoined from southesternside. It contains collection of objects like: old manuscripts, liturgical silver and golden objects, Middle Age icons, and old church vestment. One of capitulary objects is an evangelistary from 7-8th c. And «Historia Salonitana», Split church cronicle by Thomas Arcidiaconus from 13th c. The former crypt was in Middle Age turned into the chapel of St. Lucy (Sv.Lucija). Cathedral bell-tower It was built from 13th to 16th century. As it was partly pulled down, it was completely restored in 19thc. Some of original bell-tower sculptures are kept in The Split city Museum. At the foot of bell-tower two lions guard cathedral entrance. Above two bell-tower entrances there are two relief carvings of Annunciation and Nativity. The bell-tower is recognized Split monument.
