Grgur Ninski

Giant monument 6 meters tall was made by Ivan Meštrović. Gregory of Nin, in first half of 10th c., was one of greatest advocate of replacement of Latin lanugage used in Croatian churches by Croatian language. At Great church Assembly held in 925. in Split he fought together with king Thomas (Tomislav) for religious services to be held on Croatian (Slavinian) language and for usage Glagolotic script as letter. Assembly verdicts should have been confirmed by contemporary Pope Ivan X, but it was not done in 925, cause different reports and letters reached Pope. On second Assembly also held in Split in 928. Bishopy of Nin was abolished, and he was assigned to Bishopy of Skradin. On same Assembly church authority was given to Split bishop. Ordainment of priest performing masses on Old Croatian language (all not knowing Latin), and liturgic language has officially became latin. As there were not many priests speaking Latin, chuch ceremonies continued to be performed on Old Croatian with usage og Glagolitic.
