Silver gate

Silver gate

Silver Gate (Porta argentea), the eastern entrance to the palace. There are two niches, probably each held the sculpture. Only remnants of the two octagonal towers, are preserved. Restored in 1952. after they were destroyed during World War II. During Middle Age they were walled up, and beside them in 1764. the lower "Venetian" door was opened. From the Silver gate starts the original ancient pavement. It has been dedicated to St. Apollinaris.
